This past week I had the opportunity to interview the lab and keynote speakers from the Catalyst Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia. Most of the conference I was in a backstage basement room doing interviews every thirty minutes. It was a grueling (read: fast and fun) time in the Gwinnett Center catacombs.
I was impressed by the themes that ran through many of the interviews. From William Paul Young to John Burke to Matt Chandler everyone seemed to touch on the need for leaders to learn what it means to abide in God.
It is easy for church leaders to get caught up in pursuing the quintessential "successful church" while omitting their relationship with God from the equation. The bottom line: ambition is empty, be where God is. William Paul Young's comments were, perhaps, the most convicting. 'I'd rather be back at some job selling ________ (whatever) than being involved in something that God is not in."
